Vintage stockings and their sizing

Hi,

Do you have any tips on buying vintage nylons? How do we improve our chances of buying ones that fit?

Naomi

Good question, it isn’t easy to choose the right size so below is a rough guide to vintage (and new) stocking sizing:

  • Stockings are measured in 2 parts – foot size and leg length
  • Below is a guide to foot measurement

8.5 = US size 5/ UK size 2.5
8.5 =
US size 6/ UK size 3.5
9 =
US size 6.5/ UK size 4
9.5 =
US size 7/ UK size 4.5
9.5 =
US size 7.5/ UK size 5
10 =
US size 8/ UK size 5.5
10 =
US size 8.5/ UK size 6
10 =
US size 9/ UK size 6.5
10.5 =
US size 9.5/ UK size 7
10.5 =
US size 10/ UK size 7.5
11 =
US size 10.5/ UK size 8
11 =
US size 11/ UK size 8.5
11.5 =
US size 11.5/ UK size 9
11.5 =
US size 12/ UK size 9.5
12 =
US size 13/ UK size 10.5
12 =
US size 14/ UK size 11.5

  • Leg length is (with the stocking laid flat) from the heel of the foot to the top of the welt of the stocking

  • If you’re concerned about width for your thighs, I suggest looking for cotton welts which are stretchy, rather than nylon tops which aren’t stretchy.
