Plus sized foundations

Yesterday my partner and I walked past a plus-size clothing store and noticed some of the dresses in the windows, we were both really surprised to see a few dresses that quite frankly looked like decorated potato sacks. I had always been under the impression that plus-sized shops stocked clothes that were cut in a way that showed off a woman’s body in a flattering manner, rather than simply hiding it under a sack. There are of course some good stores that stock some great clothes but I was a little disappointed to have seen those dresses.

In my opinion, regardless of whether a woman is a size 8 or a size 18, she should be able to feel beautiful and feminine, should she wish to do so. One of the great things about the pinup/ vintage/ retro look is that it emphasises a woman’s silhouette and is incredibly flattering for all shapes and sizes. In my opinion, its a real shame when women hide their voluptuous bodies under unflattering modern clothes, because they have nothing to be ashamed of and there are plenty of tools which we can employ to make the most of our assets.

Good foundations:

I am a firm believer in good foundation wear, it can’t be denied that good shapewear will smooth out and control your problem areas.

Bra and knicker set

Triumph – Poesie firm support wire-free bra – sizes 12B to 24DD

Triumph – Belform panty – sizes 12 to 24

This Triumph bra is incredibly comfortable as well as supportive, it also provides a slight pointed shape which means that its a great alternative to a bullet bra. These knickers are incredibly firm, I also swear they are magical… The tops don’t roll down and I have never had VPL from wearing them.

Corselettes

Plus size bras – Body shaping open corselette 30003/ Body shaping open corselette zip30003 – sizes 12 to 30

Plussizebras.com.au stock a wide range of shapewear, including a selection of corselettes. The cup shapes are made up of three pieces, just like the Triumph bra above.  I would highly recommend corselettes as they provide firm support all over and you will never get a muffin-top wearing one of these!

Waist cinchers

Plus size bras – Belly band waist cincher – sizes 1X(14-16) to 4x (20-22)

Waist cinchers are great if you want to emulate a corselette by pairing it up with a girdle. These items are essentially stretchy corsets and are designed to pull your waist in, they are very comfortable and sometimes come with suspender straps, meaning that you can just wear it over your knickers without a girdle or suspender belt, should you wish to do so.

Girdles

Domino Dollhouse – Vintage style Girdle – sizes 2X to 8X

Plus size bras – Flirt Girdle – sizes L (14) to 5X (24-26-28)

Girdles are perfect for smoothing out the tummy and hip areas, but make sure that they are strong and well structured with panelling at the front, to provide extra support to the problem areas. I have often heard from women that they get muffin tops from their girdles, if this is the case then I would recommend sizing up as they should never create bulges.

Corsets

Orchard Corset – Steel boned long-line under bust corset in cotton (and many more) – sizes 16 – 46

Although corsets might not be practical for every day use, they can look fantastic under or over clothes for special occasions. If you want a beautiful  striking hourglass silhouette, this is the way to go about getting it. The great thing about corsets is that they are always handmade which means that a lot of companies are open to custom orders.

Suspender belts

The big tights company – Lace suspender belt six strap – sizes 22 to 34

Stockings HQ – Classic 12 strap plain front suspender belt – sizes S to XL (size down for this belt)

I would always recommend that all ladies, but especially ladies with nice big hips should choose a deep suspender belt with thick straps. I have previously written a detailed post about what makes up a good suspender belt, which you can read here. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend the above suspender belts as shapers as they are not as supportive as girdles, but providing you have the correct size, they can’t do any harm.

Stockings

The big tights company – Magic seamed stockings 20 denier – varied sizes

Nylonica – Linea lusso microfibre 55 denier opaque stockings – sizes XXL to XXXXL

Of course, where you have girdles and suspender belts, you must also have stockings! There are many great brands out there that are catering to the plus size market, a great place to explore is Stockings HQ, go check them out!

Pair a combination of these items with a beautiful pinup dress from Pinup Girl Clothing, Domino Dollhouse or other brands who make plus size clothing and you’re guaranteed to turn heads for the right reasons!

    • Hi Holly, I’m not sure about corselettes, I will have a look around though and let you know if I see anything. There are so many brands making plus sized stockings now, it’s great! If you look on Stockings HQ, there are loads, I just didn’t want to list them all 🙂 I will have to check out the kix’ies!

  1. Hi there, I’m just getting started in Pinup and am wanting to explore shapewear since I’ve always loved the silhouette it creates. So happy I’ve found your blog, and this article in particular has been a great help with some really good ideas!
I have a very classic hourglass shape, albeit one in which the sand has shifted down somewhat 🙂 (43-37-52). I have a Rago waist-cincher which is great, and I actually really like the classic look of the Rago brand. What I really want is a longline bra to go with it. However, I’m a G cup – most days I wear a Triumph embroidered minimizer bra in a 14G (Australian sizing). From what I can see this translates to about a 36H in US sizing – and I just cannot find a good longline bra in that size.
    Can you offer any advice?
