Last year I was fortunate enough to be able to attend Lowana of Vanyanis’ beginner’s corsetry class. During this class we learned to make a single layer underbust corset, and since the course I have made several corsets, including my Foundations Revealed competition entry.
Although I very much enjoy making single layer corsets, I felt somewhat restricted as I wasn’t able to use ‘fashion fabrics’. I found so many beautiful fabrics that I really wanted to use but just couldn’t get to work without creating a wrinkly mess.
Luckily for me, Lowana was planning on running an advanced class that I was able to attend, and I’m so pleased I did! Lowana provided us with her own Vanyanis pattern that we used to partially prepare our mock-ups before class. Once we got to her studio, we completed them in a slightly different way to the beginner’s class.
Once the fit had been checked and any changes made to the pattern, we learned about different types of fabric and how to work with them. We then cut out our coutil and ‘fashion fabrics’. I brought with me some green and gold fabric that I had bought earlier this year in Thailand. Although I really liked the fabric, I really liked the black and gold effect on the ‘wrong side’ of the fabric, so we decided to make the corset with that side facing up.
We added a ton of boning channels and steel bones, which made me very happy…
We learned about ‘turn of cloth’ which is exactly what I needed to know in order to create a corset with a ‘fashion layer’.
We then stitched all the panels together and added bias binding (previously my arch nemesis)…
And then… Badaboom, I finished my corset!
NOT A DAMN WRINKLE IN SIGHT!
I’m so proud of this corset, it’s definitely my best work and it’s all thanks to Lowana. I also had so much fun with my awesome classmate Andrea who made me laugh all weekend!
